About this song:

You might be wondering why I recorded a song about Jesus, especially one that sounds so dang creepy. I have the fabulous L.E.Bolden to thank for the haunting melody, piano arrangement and vocals. We originally recorded this to go on her very first Christmas Album, but found that at just 60bpm, the lament dragged and wasn't strong enough to hold its own on the classical style album. During that first set of recordings, Lyndsay was quite adamant that only voice and piano were necessary, and we had seven other songs that turned out to her satisfaction, so we agreed to drop this one from the album. However, I found the melody quite compelling, and saw potential for a more modern, distorted darkwave vibe. As a joke, I produced the song the way I heard it in my mind and sent it her way expecting disapproval. Surprisingly, she liked the concept and this began to open the door for more experimentation with her work.

I know it is far from perfect, but I wanted to keep it in its original form for posterity. This was the first track I produced for Lyndsay where I was able to just let loose and be creative. Perhaps I will find it in myself to remix it in the future. Until then, I hope you enjoy this spooky take on a classical Christmas piece.

About this song:

We produced this song in college -  a team of 6 students and one professor, doing our best with a limited time frame and making the most of the wicked recording studio at Ottawa's Algonquin College. Although the rest of the team was far more experienced musically than I and so opted to avoid staining their reputations, this is the best example of my singing available at the moment, so I will proudly display it. The goal was to reproduce a song as closely as possible and I think we did a decent job. I was extremely lucky to be surrounded by incredible talent - drums, piano, guitar, bass and vocals were all recorded in person despite the limitations brought on by the pandemic that was happening at the time. I no longer remember every technique we used but there were at least 14 mics on the drum set and I'm pretty sure the guitar and bass were re-amped. We had a great time trying to reverse engineer the various digital effects that had been applied on the original song. I still cringe a little in the breakdown, which was left until last, but listening to it a few years later, I find it an impressive production all things considered. The opportunity to be recorded with a Neumann U87 was an absolute dream come true.

It occurs to me that I may never again get the chance to record in a studio that is so well-kitted, but I intend to continue building my own one  XLR cable at a time.
