How to Commission Your Very Own Hand-Made Custom Artwork

Step 1:

Have a good idea of what you want your finished product to look like at least 2 months before you need it to be finished. Be ready to provide a colour scheme and reference images for subject and style. It is also best know the dimensions you need your piece to be, and know what materials you want me to use. Having this information at the ready allows me to make a more accurate estimate of cost, time and materials. It also lets me begin your project much faster!

If you are not sure of the direction you wish to take on a particular element of the composition, we can discuss options in detail during a free consultation over e-mail or Facebook messenger.

Here are just a few examples of past commissions I've completed:

Step 2:

Contact me by e-mail (felix.a.vanasse@gmail.com) or on Facebook and tell me your idea. Here is an example e-mail:

"Hello,

I'd like to get a portrait done up of my lovely kitties, Mr. Fluffykins and Mme. Chaos. Acrylic on canvas would work well, I think. I did a quick google search of standard canvas sizes and found that 24 x 30 inches would fit perfectly on the wall right above my couch. I have attached a picture of the two of them getting up to some mischief; I like the pose, but it would be great if you could paint them closer together and make sure they are centered in frame. I realize the lighting in the photo isn't the best, so I'd really appreciate if you could brighten the colours up. I can provide more images of their fur patterns and more guidance on colour modifications if you need.

I want it to be done before a party I'm having 2 months from now. I live in the Nepean area in Ottawa and would really appreciate if I could get it delivered to my address. Please let me know how much you would charge and when you could have it done/delivered.

Thanks for your time, looking forward to hearing back soon!

-Cat Commissioner"

I will reply to your inquiry within 1-3 business days.

Step 3:

Decide if you want to go ahead with the commission based on my reply. If we agree to proceed with the creation of your art, I will write down all details in my commission log and begin preparing an invoice. In the event that you are commissioning art to use in a for-profit venture, further negotiations may be necessary so that we can draft a written agreement for fair use of the work.

If any aspect of the design is still uncertain, I will prepare a quick sketch at this stage to give you a better idea of some possible compositions, help you choose colours etc.

Step 4:

Pay half of the price up front via e-transfer, cash or cheque. This will provide me with immediate resources to obtain the correct materials for you piece, as well as provide some assurance that you are a trustworthy client.

Step 5:

Wait for the magic to happen, and keep an eye out for updates! I may ask your opinion on certain details as I go, just to be sure it meets your needs and represents your vision as best as possible.

Step 6:

Receive your finished, custom artwork and pay the last half of the price. Depending on where you are located and the nature of the art, delivery could happen in a number of ways.

Digital art: Files in file formats specified by you (e.g. .png, .jpg, .gif) will be sent to you instantaneously and free of charge over e-mail, Google Drive or any other free-to-use platform you would like. Once you receive them, generally you can use them for anything you like as long as I am legibly credited where-ever it is displayed. Additional considerations apply for creations expressly designed to make you revenue, such as business logos, merchandise designs, book and album covers etc.

Physical art: I can deliver anywhere in the Russell/Embrun and Ottawa/Gatineau areas for an extra fee of just $30. Alternatively, you can pick up your artwork at my studio address for no additional charge. For delivery outside of the specified areas, I can package and ship your piece anywhere in Canada, though special charges may apply.

Step 7:

Bask in the glow of your brand new bespoke masterpiece.
